A freewheeling Detroit cop pursuing a murder investigation finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills. Detroit cop Axel Foley is delighted when he receives a surprise visit from his best friend Mikey Tandino, who lives in California. Not long after Mikey arrives in Detroit, Mikey is killed, right in front of Axel, by a man named Zack. Axel follows Zack to Beverly Hills, California, where Beverly Hills police department Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil assigns Detective Billy Rosewood and Rosewood's partner, Sergeant John Taggart, to keep an eye on Axel. Axel visits his friend Jenny Summers, who works in an art gallery. With Jenny's help, Axel discovers that Zack works for Jenny's boss, Victor Maitland, the man who owns the art gallery. Maitland is a drug kingpin who is using the gallery as a front, and Maitland had Zack kill Mikey after Maitland accused Mikey of stealing some of Maitland's bonds. With the help of Jenny, Billy, and Taggart, Axel does what he can to make sure Maitland and Zack won't kill any more people. Beverly Hills Cop is one of the best 1980s films. It also helped propel the career of Eddie Murphy. As Detroit cop Axel Foley, he is on a murder trail that leads him to the quaint city of Beverly Hills. This is a film that pokes fun at cultural differences between two very different types of environments - Detroit and Beverly Hills. The great thing about this film is how the 3 main actors, Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton, are properly cast in their roles, they definitely work well together. Also, the score to this film is both inventive, new, and classic 1980s style (kudos to the composer and songwriters). This is a must see film for all ages - 8 out of 10! Beverly Hills Cop is a classic. It has is all, great music, action, and side splitting, gut busting, nut aching comedy. Eddie Murphy proves he is a comedic genius in his portrayal of streetwise Detective Axel Foley. Director Martin Brest and his screenwriters fill the screen with classic scene after classic scene. The only downside is the cliched cocaine smuggling subplot. But that's a small fault in an otherwise kick ass, classic comedy film. The result is a movie that can be wonderfully languid and wonderfully breakneck as well, a formula movie so gleefully bedizened with quirks that it always seems better than it is. [5 Dec. 1984, p.C1]
